Our agricultural industries and rural communities are the backbone of our nation. However, the current biosecurity measures in place are inadequate, leaving them vulnerable to pests, diseases, and other challenges. It is crucial to prioritise biosecurity and leverage technology to detect and respond to threats effectively.
To address these challenges, we need to embrace advanced technology and collaboration. Additionally, we must prioritize faster and more accurate surveillance data, practical analytical tools, and advanced diagnostic techniques. Drawing lessons from successful responses to COVID-19, we can develop field-ready tools that guide decision-making and assist with laboratory diagnostics.
At the agricultural convention evokeAg 2023, a panel of experts highlighted the value of biosecurity and the enhanced technology that will help us detect and respond to threats more effectively. It included Andrew Henderson of Agsecure, joined by panellists Dr Samantha Allan of Animal Health Australia, Sarah Corcoran of Plant Health Australia, Ryan Higgs of Onside, and Danny Le Feuvre of the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council.
