To improve flood resilience, the Two Wells township will soon benefit from the construction of a levee, designed to protect against severe floods from Salt Creek, Gawler River, and Light River. This $2.02 million project, fully funded by the Australian Government’s National Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Program and local developer contributions, will protect around 182 properties from 1-in-100-year flood events by diverting floodwaters at critical entry points near Gawler Road and Port Wakefield Road.
Key Project Details
- Location: The levee spans the eastern and southern sides of Two Wells, providing flood control against runoff from Salt Creek and nearby rivers.
- Design: Built from clay and covered with dryland grass that grows in winter, the levee combines durability with natural aesthetics to integrate with the landscape.
- Why a Levee?: Alternatives like dams were considered but deemed too costly and lengthy to implement. The levee offers a cost-effective solution specifically for Two Wells, supporting both safety and economic stability.
- Impact on Surrounding Properties: While most construction is on Council land, nearby properties can expect increased protection from flooding. Field assessments indicate minor increases in flood depth at the township’s fringes, but no significant risk to homes outside the levee.
