The Barossa Valley’s revered Clubhouse, with a storied legacy stretching back to 1891, has added another illustrious chapter to its tale. At the recent 2023 Clubs and Community Awards, they clinched not one, but three major accolades: ‘Best Refurbishment’, ‘Best Bar Environment’, and the coveted ‘Club of the Year – Large’. These prestigious awards shine a light on The Clubhouse’s dedication to excellence and its deep roots in the community.
General Manager, Jack Ferrett, voiced his pride and gratitude: “In the past we won Best Regional Club of The Year, but this… against competition from metropolitan and regional locations… is a fantastic result.” Board Chairman, Scott Virgo, mirrored this sentiment, saying, “It was euphoric at our table when the announcement was made. It was a night filled with emotion at just how far we’ve come to build the club to where it is today.”
While the awards stand as significant milestones, The Clubhouse’s essence is its community focus. As a licensed, not-for-profit establishment, it’s been the heart of the Barossa community for well over a century. Today, it boasts modern amenities that have garnered industry recognition. But beyond the facilities lies a club deeply woven into the fabric of Barossa’s community life.
With a staggering 600% growth in membership over the past decade, the Club now proudly serves over 1,200 members. Jack Ferrett highlighted the sense of belonging that defines the venue, “Visitors often comment on the great feeling of fellowship… This is largely due to the sense of ownership our members feel; The Clubhouse is very much their club.”
Its community commitment is evident in its extensive service to Barossa. Last year alone, members claimed over $50,000 in returned benefits. The Clubhouse also wears many hats: from a hub for family events and celebrations to its invaluable contribution through sponsorships, charitable donations, and involvement in community events.
Reflecting on a time when The Clubhouse almost closed its doors in 2001 due to financial hardship, the story of its revival showcases the indomitable community spirit. Thanks to members who pledged over $534,000, the Club could rise from its challenges, repay those pledges by 2008, and set the course for the success it enjoys today.
Jack Ferrett summed up the essence of The Clubhouse, “We believe we have got the balance pretty right. The community realizes that the more they support the Club, the more we can give back. Community Clubs… are about bringing people together and uniting communities, and that’s a very rewarding ethos to be a part of.”
With its recent accolades, The Clubhouse not only cements its position as a premier venue in Barossa Valley but also reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the community that has supported it for over a century.
