Cycling infrastructure in South Australia is set for a major boost, with new projects funded by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) under the latest round of cycling grants and the national Road Safety Program. The combined investments total more than $22 million, supporting local councils in delivering new and upgraded bike paths, crossings, and safety improvements.
The $2 million State Bicycle Fund provides funding to 21 projects across 14 councils to improve cycling infrastructure, encouraging safer and more accessible bike travel. This includes widening shared-use paths, installing new crossings, and improving connectivity for cyclists.
Gawler and Adelaide Plains Projects
- Town of Gawler: Construction of a 700-metre shared-use path along Clark Road and Coventry Road in Evanston Gardens, linking to Tambelin Railway Station.
- Adelaide Plains Council: New connecting paths and street lighting adjacent to Mallala Road, Two Wells, improving accessibility and safety.
These projects are part of the broader $168 million investment in cycling and pedestrian upgrades under the Road Safety Program, jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian Governments. Improvements across the state include new Bicycle and Pedestrian Actuated Crossings (BPACs), wombat crossings, and shared-use paths.
Cycling infrastructure improvements contribute to healthier, more connected communities while enhancing safety for both cyclists and pedestrians. These upgrades ensure more direct, accessible, and safer routes, reducing risks for active commuters and recreational riders.
