Farmers across South Australia, including those in the Light, Barossa, Riverland, and Clare Valleys, are facing significant financial challenges due to recent frosts, prolonged dry spells, and market downturns. The impact is particularly severe for grape growers, who may face a 12-month loss of income, as well as horticultural producers and livestock farmers dealing with rising costs.
Thanks to funding from the South Australian, Australian, and Northern Territory Governments, Rural Business Support (RBS) offers vital assistance through the Rural Financial Counselling Service (RFCS). This service is designed to help farmers, fishers, foresters, and small rural enterprises navigate their financial challenges.
RFCS provides free, confidential, and independent support, helping producers:
- Understand their financial position
- Manage debt and cash flow
- Explore refinancing options
- Plan for market changes
- Access relevant grants and professional advice
RBS is also offering small grants to assist with essential items like groceries, medical bills, and school fees through its Relief Fund for families engaged in RFCS.
Farmers are encouraged to reach out at the first sign of financial pressure. Brett Smith, a rural financial counsellor with RBS, explains, “We’re another set of eyes supporting farmers to model options and manage the season’s impact.”
