The Northern Park Lands will be Greater Adelaide’s largest investment in public open space, covering almost 1000 hectares—39% larger than the Adelaide Park Lands. Located south of Gawler, adjacent to the Kudla growth area, it will provide natural open space, recreation facilities, and transport connections.
As part of the Greater Adelaide Regional Plan (GARP), the parklands will include:
- Three Linear Parks with 38 km of walking and cycling paths, forming a continuous loop around Gawler
- A new railway station along the electrified Gawler line
- A 70-hectare Village Green, a sport and recreation area equivalent to 31 Adelaide Ovals, featuring ovals, courts, and clubroom facilities
- Over 760 hectares of green space for biodiversity, habitat preservation, and urban cooling
Environmental and Community Benefits
The Northern Park Lands will be located adjacent to the Kudla growth area south of Gawler, providing an uninterrupted journey from the hills face to the Gawler River via Karbeethan Reserve. It will serve as a vital inter-urban break between new growth areas and more established areas of the Town of Gawler, ensuring long-term environmental and recreational value.
More than 760 hectares will be preserved as natural open space, increasing vegetation, supporting biodiversity, and providing new recreation opportunities. The 38 km of shared-use trails will connect residential areas to green spaces, supporting walking, cycling, and community access.
Funding and Management
The State Government of SA has committed $53 million towards the first stage, with future funding from land development revenue and council contributions.
A new statutory authority, the Northern Park Lands Trust, will be established through legislation to oversee management, maintenance, and development. The trust will operate with a level of independence, similar to the West Beach Trust, ensuring long-term sustainability.
The project will require some land acquisitions, and government-owned land will be developed as open space with increased vegetation coverage.
