Mount Pleasant Butcher has left the 2023 Charcuterie Excellence Awards with a remarkable haul, securing nine gold medals and two prestigious national awards. This family-owned rural butcher received accolades for an array of products, including bacon, ham, mettwurst, pepperoni, black pudding, white pudding, kabana, smoked turkey, and fritz. Their bacon and smoked turkey even clinched the National Grand Champion awards. Gawler’s Wintulichs Smallgoods also flew home with gold in the streaky bacon category. Both businesses doing our region proud!
Owner and Director of Mount Pleasant Butcher, Jamie Hylan, expressed their surprise, emphasizing the significance of these achievements for both their business and the passionate staff. He highlighted their unique smoking process, using wood-powered smokehouses, which sets them apart from the majority of small goods makers in Australia. According to Jamie, “It’s moist and it is still very, very smoky, so a lot smokier than any other bacon from the market, but it is not a chewy bacon, it is quite a soft bacon to eat.”
Mount Pleasant Butcher’s success was celebrated at the 2023 Australian Charcuterie Excellence Awards, organized by the Australian Meat Industry Council in partnership with Australian Pork Limited, Cold Xpress, and William Angliss Institute. These awards not only recognize quality and excellence but also promote industry standards and showcase Australian charcuterie products globally. Jamie attributed their exceptional bacon to the quality of South Australian female pork, sourced from local businesses.
Since Jamie’s acquisition of the store in 2002, Mount Pleasant Butcher has thrived, expanding to two locations with a fleet of trucks and a dedicated team. Their commitment to learning and supporting local suppliers continues to drive their growth. To learn more about their offerings, visit the Mount Pleasant Butcher Facebook page.
