On 9 October, the Barossa Regional University Campus (BRUC) hosted the Food Processing Pathways Information Session, bringing together local food producers and prospective students to explore career opportunities in the food processing industry. Organised by the Australian Food Training Centre and supported by Food South Australia, the event provided valuable insights into the region’s thriving food industry and the potential launch of a Certificate III in Food Processing at BRUC in 2025.
The session featured interactive presentations and demonstrations from local food producers, including Barossa Valley Cheese Company, Wiech’s Barossa Valley Egg Noodles, Barossa Kitchen, and Careme Pastry. These businesses showcased their high-quality products and explained the detailed processes behind their production, giving attendees a glimpse into the skills and expertise required to produce the Barossa Valley’s renowned food offerings.
David Healy, a food processing expert and trainer from the Australian Food Training Centre, delivered a keynote, discussing the proposed Certificate III in Food Processing. Healy highlighted how the course, if launched, would provide hands-on, practical training for students, giving them the opportunity to work with local businesses while gaining essential skills in areas such as production management, quality control, and food safety.
Hayley Laney, Manager of Education & Workforce at BRUC, reflected on the session:
“This event was a great opportunity for students and businesses to come together and explore the potential of growing local talent. The proposed Certificate III in Food Processing would allow students to gain the skills they need while staying in the Barossa, which is crucial for our local industry. Our local producers are passionate about their work, and they’re eager to support the next generation of food processors.”
BRUC serves as a free local study hub, offering students access to educational facilities and support without the need to leave the region.
