In Kapunda, a volunteer-led initiative has significantly transformed the main streets. The Kapunda Mural Town Project, started by a small group eight years ago, has now adorned the town with 13 vibrant murals, contributing to a noticeable increase in visitors and reviving the local economy.
The murals, varying in size and all painted or designed by volunteers, depict the town’s rich history, local flora, and fauna, and have even earned two nominations for the Australian Street Art Awards. This project was sparked by the desire to attract visitors and fill the empty spaces with art that tells the story of Kapunda.
The initiative not only improved the town’s aesthetics but also its community spirit and economy, reducing the number of vacant shops from five or six to just one. With plans to expand their work, the Kapunda Mural Town Project is a testament to how art can transform public spaces and bring communities together.
