Got a broken toaster, a torn pair of jeans, or a wonky appliance collecting dust? Well, mark your calendars for the Gawler Repair Cafe, Saturday, October 21, 2023, 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM
at Evanston Gardens Community Centre. This fantastic initiative is brought to you by Gawler Environment Centre. No reservations are required – just drop in and let the magic happen!
How it works
Picture this: a cozy spot where you can team up with skilled volunteers to give your beloved items a new lease on life. They’ve got experts in clothing and textile mending, small appliance fixes, costume jewelry repairs, general tinkering (mechanical and woodwork), and even simple bike repairs. And the best part? It’s absolutely free! But hey, if you feel like giving back, they won’t say no to a small donation.
So, you stroll in with your broken stuff. Most of the time, you’ll get a repairer’s attention quickly. But just in case there’s a queue, there’s coffee, tea, and cake to keep you entertained.
- Learn While You Wait: They’re all about teaching you how to make those repairs yourself, if possible. So, while the magic happens, hang out with our repairer, watch the process, and even give it a whirl.
- Clean Is Key: For our repairers to work their magic, your items should be clean. If it’s textiles, please give ’em a wash first.
- Some No-Gos: Sorry, but they can’t work miracles on microwaves, TVs, or anything hazardous like asbestos and lead. And if it needs a massive workshop, like welding, it’s a no-go. Also, some things, like toasters and computers, are just too tricky.
- One Repair per Person: They’ll tackle one item per visitor. If time permits, they might squeeze in a second, but it depends on the waiting list.
- Mending, Not Tailoring: For clothes and textiles, they do mending and repairs, not fancy alterations. Got something that needs taking up or in? That’s a job for the pros.
- No Guarantees: Our repairers are rock stars, but there are no guarantees. They’ll give it their all, though!
