The Gawler community celebrated a significant enhancement in local healthcare by opening the new $15 million Gawler Health Service Emergency Department. This state-of-the-art facility represents a critical improvement in emergency healthcare services for residents of Gawler and surrounding areas.
The department’s design emphasises increasing capacity and incorporating modern facilities to ensure high-quality emergency care. Health Minister Chris Picton highlighted the importance of the new emergency department, stating it offers over three times the number of beds compared to the old facility, including 12 adult acute treatment bays, significantly increasing from four, and introducing two specialized pediatric treatment bays—a first for Gawler. Additionally, including a negative pressure room exemplifies the commitment to specialised patient care.
Constructed in partnership with Schiavello Construction SA, DIT, and SA Health, the emergency department aims to streamline emergency services with features like a patient resuscitation bay, a hybrid procedure patient bay, and modern patient admission and consulting spaces. These enhancements are set to offer a more comprehensive and efficient emergency care experience.
The unveiling of this facility marks the first phase of a three-stage development plan for the Gawler Health Service. The plan includes further renovations and expansions intended to meet the growing healthcare needs of the community. The project not only aims to improve patient care but also to alleviate the pressure on hospital inpatient wards by increasing capacity, further supported by the state government’s commitment to fund an additional 16 general medical beds.
