The Northern Adelaide Plains Food Cluster Disaster Risk Project is protecting South Australia’s food bowl by mapping risks and strengthening emergency preparedness across key production zones.
The Northern Adelaide Plains Food Cluster has launched the Disaster Risk Project in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Department of Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA). The project supports food security by mapping critical infrastructure, identifying vulnerabilities, and strengthening response and recovery planning.
What It Is
The Disaster Risk Project collects ground-level data on cropping patterns, farm infrastructure, water access, and supply chains. This information will support agencies with more accurate, real-time decision-making tools, including a new interactive mapping platform.
Why It Matters
South Australia’s food sector contributes over $400 million annually in the Adelaide Plains alone, yet 16.4% of South Australians experience food insecurity. This project helps protect key production areas from threats such as floods, fire, storms, and pests by improving coordination between producers, communities, and emergency services.
How to Take Action
The project is now conducting assessments across five production zones in the Adelaide Plains region. Community participation is welcome.
