Agave—the plant traditionally used to produce tequila—isn’t commonly associated with South Australian agriculture. But interest is growing. In 2024, South Australia’s first commercial agave crop was planted in Willunga, and now, Luna Brewing and Distilling is exploring the Barossa as a potential site for small-scale agave cultivation and distillation.
Founded by Justin Conceicao in 2024, Luna Brewing and Distilling is based in Cockatoo Valley. The company produces artisanal agave spirits using traditional Mexican methods and also offers a range of non-alcoholic beers. Luna’s approach is hands-on and sustainable, with a focus on showcasing the full journey from plant to bottle.
Justin is now seeking a few hectares of land in the Barossa with the right conditions—well-draining soil, elevation to reduce frost risk, and a suitable climate—for growing blue Weber agave. As a long-term crop, agave takes five to seven years to mature. Justin’s goal is to establish a small-batch agave distillery and cellar door that offers an immersive visitor experience alongside local wine tourism.
This project would add a unique new crop to the region and contribute to the diversity of the Barossa’s established food and beverage sector.
