The Barossa Valley, known for its scenic vineyards and rich heritage, faces a hidden challenge: the increasing issue of youth homelessness. This situation, exacerbated by recent global events, has left many young people in our community without a stable place to call home. However, hope is on the horizon with the efforts of local organisations.
The Heart of the Problem
Youth homelessness extends beyond the absence of a physical home. It encompasses a disruption in stability, education, and growth opportunities. The pandemic has intensified this problem, leading to a significant rise in young individuals lacking a secure living environment.
Champions of Change
Foundation Barossa, in collaboration with Kids Under Cover, Centacare, and Homburg Real Estate, has stepped up to address this crisis. These organisations have united to combine their resources, skills, and compassion in crafting a sustainable solution.
A Comprehensive Strategy
At the forefront of this initiative is Kids Under Cover’s innovative studio program. These studios, built in the backyards of family homes, provide a haven for young people, offering them a place to regain stability and independence. The first studio in the Barossa Valley, established in Nuriootpa, is a testament to this approach.
The State Government has also played a crucial role, allocating $2.4 million to support the costs for the first set of studios. In addition, the Homburg Homelessness Prevention Fund, initiated by Foundation Barossa in 2020, has received impressive community backing, raising substantial funds towards this endeavor.
How to Apply
For those in need of a studio, the application process is accessible and supportive:
- Evaluation: The team at Centacare evaluates the individual’s situation to identify their specific needs.
- Application: If suitable, Centacare applies for a studio on behalf of the individual.
- Approval Process: Applications undergo a thorough review. Successful ones move forward to the planning and installation stage of the studio.
Your involvement can make a tangible impact. Contributions can come in various forms – donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness. For applications or to offer support, contact Centacare at nuriootpa@centacare.org.au or call 08 8303 6625.
By joining hands, we can ensure that the youth in Barossa have access to the stability and security they deserve.
