The 2024 National Reconciliation Week Breakfast today at the Adelaide Convention Centre brought together over 2800 attendees to reflect on our journey towards reconciliation. The event paid a moving tribute to Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue AC CBE DSG, a proud Yankunytjatjara woman who broke barriers as SA’s first Aboriginal trainee nurse, and inaugural Chairperson of ATSIC. She played a key role in the Native Title legislation.
Keynote speaker Adam Briggs, a proud Yorta Yorta man and renowned artist, emphasised the ongoing fight for justice and rights for First Nations people.
We also heard from:
- Hon. Kyam Maher MLC, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Attorney-General of South Australia
- Helen Connolly and Jeremy Johncock, Co-Chairs of Reconciliation SA
- Performances by Dem Mob, Desert & Sea Dance, and Rob Edwards
Leonie Boothby, CEO of RDABGLAP, attended as a Northern and Yorke Landscape Board guest. She reflected, “Attending this event was a reminder of the importance for every organisation, business, and resident to explore how they can contribute to reconciliation. The tribute to Dr O’Donoghue was especially moving and meaningful. It’s a call to action for all of us to engage deeply and work collaboratively towards a reconciled future with the traditional custodians of the lands we work on, the Kaurna, Ngadjuri, and Peramangk peoples.”
